How did all this start?!
Our project to get out the facts about drugs started when Australian Fashion Designer, Sophia Banks, and her movie Director brother, Nick Banks, arrived back in Sydney for New Year’s Eve 2006 (they both spend most of their time in LA these days) and they noticed how rampant drug use was during this time – rather than whinging about it they decided to do something about it!
So they called their friend, international drug-education activist Carly Crutchfield, and started brain storming.
Nick and Sophia followed Carly’s lead and got started immediately by launching their own Myspace sites centered around drug education. The results spoke for themselves with emails and messages pouring in from parents, kids, teenagers, adults, users, addicts, friends of users and more – all applauding the factual education and unbiased way in which it as delivered. And it proved popular with more than 20,000 hits and thousands of the free educational booklets being downloaded!
Sophia decided she wanted to ramp it up and really target New Year’s Eve 2007 when drug usage is even more rampant, so the trio got to thinking and working and are happy to announce and bring to you the biggest one day drug education event in Australia – in fact the biggest in the world! And all privately funded, yep; this has been thought of by the people, for the people and with the people!
And they did it! On Friday, 28th of December 2007 – more than 50 volunteers of multiple races, religions, ages and cultures came together to help educate Sydney-siders on the real facts of the four most popular new years eve drugs; Cocaine, Joints, Ecstasy and Ice.
They got out over 65,000 of these booklets into the hands of people in one day. Check out our photos of the big day showing all the action. Thanks to everyone who gave their time and help!
The books are also available on this website for you to download for FREE.
We are going to be doing it again on 26 June 2008. This is the United Nations International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.
